Injuries Caused By Animals
Perhaps the most frequent injuries caused by animals are when a person is attacked by a dog. Illinois has created the Animal Control Act that provides a statutory cause of action to proceed against those persons who own or harbor the animal. Our experience with these matters is that there are two threshold issues to be addressed. The first is recognition and development of explaining to the jury the physical and emotional scars resulting from the attack. The second is securing full and fair compensation which requires knowledge of the source of recovery. We have been successful in securing insurance coverage under the homeowner’s policy of the person charged with owning or harboring the animal.
We look to recover compensation by recognizing and then documenting damages arising from such evidence related to the following:
- Medical expenses
- Pain and suffering
- Lost income
